English Language Teaching Assistant (ELTA) Application

Program introduction


National Sun Yat-sen University is recruiting qualified and outstanding foreign students to improve Taiwanese students’ English proficiency. 

1. After completing an 18-hour English Language Teaching Assistant (ELTA) training course, qualified students will be selected to serve as ELTAs for elementary/middle schools in Kaohsiung. (Please refer to WORKSHOP).

2. ELTAs will be deployed in schools for at least 4 hours per week over 12 weeks. They will conduct activities with students and provide an English speaker presence with the goal of  improving students’ comfort and ability using English. Additionally, the program facilitates not only English language learning, but also cross-cultural exchange.

3. All ELTAs also have the privilege of taking advantage of the opportunity to participate in various related Fulbright English Teaching Assistant (ETA) program professional development training workshops. These courses are designed and taught by Fulbright advisors for ETAs and their local English co-teachers and are made available outside only to ELTAs. The workshops cover topics ranging from “teaching materials design,” “classroom management,” “bilingual education research,” and many morey practical skills that ELTAs will use in the classroom. Besides providing opportunities to improve teaching skills, you will also have chances to share your experiences with other ELTAs, ETAs, and local teachers, ETAs, and local teachers. 

4. All ELTAs are required to participate in an online advising meeting.

 

Eligibility


1. Foreign students enrolled at NSYSU who are English native speakers, or are from countries where English is spoken as the first language are eligible to apply directly. Students not in these categories not in these categories not in these categories must present proof of English language proficiency (minimum CEFR level B2). 2. Complete attendance at all sessions of the ELTA training courses (no record of leave or absence during the training) is required.

 

Remuneration


1. ELTAs will be paid NT$400 per hour for every in-school teaching session. Transportation fees are covered separately.

2. Remuneration will be provided once every two weeks directly into your Post Office account.

 

Application


1. Period: The program offers rolling admissions.

3. Short-listed applicants will be invited to the ELTA training program via email notification.

 

Selection process


1. First Stage:
Application forms and required documents will be evaluated by a committee. Qualified applicants will be short-listed and notified.

2. Second stage:
Qualified applicants must participate in the 18-hour ELTA training courses  with full attendance. After the training, applicants who meet all requirements will be offered a position as an ELTA. Each ELTA will be assigned to a specific school where they will conduct English learning activities for at least 4 hours per week for a total of 12 weeks.

 

Notes

1. Incomplete applications will not be processed. Submitted documents will not be returned to applicants at any time.

2. The project team reserves the rights to modify the content of the program, and to change, suspend, or cancel the program. If there are matters not covered, the project team will make amendments at any time, and announce these changes on the website.
